XPeng History

XPeng was co-founded in August 2014 by Xia Heng (Henry Xia) and He Tao, former senior executives at GAC Group with deep automotive expertise. Early backers included He Xiaopeng, founder of UCWeb and former Alibaba executive, who became the company's namesake, Chairman, and CEO. Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi, also invested early.

The company raised aggressively: $400 million in November 2019, $500 million in July 2020 from Aspex, Coatue, Hillhouse, and Sequoia, then another $400 million in August 2020 from Alibaba, Qatar Investment Authority, and Mubadala. On August 27, 2020, XPeng raised $1.5 billion through an IPO on the NYSE, with shares climbing over 40% on the first day.

On November 8, 2024, XPeng unveiled Iron, its first humanoid robot, at AI Day 2024. Iron featured more than 60 joints and 200 degrees of freedom, marking XPeng's entry into embodied intelligence. Chairman He Xiaopeng announced a strategic upgrade, positioning XPeng as "a mobility explorer in the physical AI world."

By end of 2026, XPeng aims to achieve large-scale mass production of high-level humanoid robots. He Xiaopeng has indicated the humanoid robotics program could warrant up to ¥100 billion ($14 billion USD) in long-term investment, signaling one of the most ambitious commitments to humanoid robotics from an automotive company.
