Introduction

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994. The pivotal 2012 acquisition of Kiva Systems for $775 million, rebranded as Amazon Robotics, triggered what observers called a "robot arms race" in warehouse automation.

Company Story

Amazon operates the world's largest commercial robotics fleet, over one million robots across its fulfillment network, including mobile drive units, robotic arms (Sparrow, Robin), and Agility Robotics' bipedal Digit. The $775 million acquisition of Kiva Systems in 2012 triggered a warehouse robotics revolution. Amazon's $1 billion Industrial Innovation Fund backs emerging robotics and AI.

History

From 200 Kiva robots, Amazon's fleet exploded to over one million by 2024. Specialized robots followed: Robin (1 billion+ packages), Sparrow (65% of catalog), Proteus (first fully autonomous mobile robot, 2022), and Titan (2,500 lbs capacity, 2023).

In 2022, Amazon invested in Agility Robotics, whose Digit began testing in fulfillment centers for tote recycling. Digit represented Amazon's first humanoid robotics foray.

Amazon's scale, billions of packages annually across hundreds of centers, makes it the world's largest real-world testbed for warehouse robotics and a critical proving ground for humanoid deployment.
