Amazon is opening a second robotics and artificial intelligence research laboratory in Berlin, doubling its research presence in the German capital as the company expands the technology behind its European logistics operations.
The new facility was announced on October 20 during the Invest in Germany Summit, where Amazon also outlined plans to invest more than €16 billion across Germany in 2027. That larger commitment covers several businesses, including cloud infrastructure, logistics, satellite connectivity and media production, rather than representing a dedicated robotics investment.
According to Amazon, the Berlin laboratory will focus on improving how employees work alongside intelligent systems, with research intended to support faster and more reliable order fulfillment. The expansion will create specialist positions for applied scientists and engineers working on robotics hardware, software and systems. Amazon did not disclose the laboratory’s budget, staffing target or a timetable for specific research releases.
The additional research capacity comes as Amazon continues modernizing its German fulfillment network with robotics and automation. The company expects upgrades at existing facilities in Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund and Werne to be completed in 2027, while work at sites in Koblenz, Pforzheim and Rheinberg will continue into 2028. These modernization projects were announced previously and should not be confused with a new robot deployment unveiled at the summit.
Amazon’s broader investment announcement also includes €4.8 billion planned for the expansion of its AWS Frankfurt cloud region in 2027. The company says it has invested more than €100 billion in Germany since 2010, and its latest plans combine additional AI infrastructure with continued investment in physical logistics operations.
The Berlin announcement concerns an expansion of robotics research capacity, not the launch of a new humanoid robot or foundation model. Amazon has not identified specific products that will emerge from the laboratory.
