Company Story

Google DeepMind is a British-American AI research lab formed in April 2023 from the merger of DeepMind and Google Brain. Led by Demis Hassabis, the lab is responsible for AlphaGo, AlphaFold (2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), and the Gemini models. In robotics, DeepMind develops Gemini Robotics, enabling robots to perceive, reason, and interact with the physical world.

History

AlphaGo defeated Go world champion Lee Sedol 4-1 in March 2016. AlphaFold's protein structure prediction earned the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Hassabis and Jumper.

In April 2023, Google merged DeepMind with Brain to form Google DeepMind under Hassabis. The combined lab was named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential Companies in 2025.

In March 2025, the lab launched Gemini Robotics, models allowing robots of any shape to perceive, reason, use tools, and interact with humans, capable of solving complex real-world tasks without specific training.
