Formed in April 2023 by merging DeepMind (founded 2010 by Demis Hassabis) with Google Brain. Responsible for AlphaGo, AlphaFold, and the RT series of robotics transformer models. RT-2 nearly doubled robot performance on novel tasks to 62%, establishing a new paradigm for transferring web knowledge to robotic control.
DeepMind was founded in London in September 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman. Google acquired it in January 2014 for $400-650 million.

Google DeepMind is a British-American AI research lab formed in April 2023 from the merger of DeepMind and Google Brain. Led by Demis Hassabis, the lab is responsible for AlphaGo, AlphaFold (2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), and the Gemini models. In robotics, DeepMind develops Gemini Robotics, enabling robots to perceive, reason, and interact with the physical world.
AlphaGo defeated Go world champion Lee Sedol 4-1 in March 2016. AlphaFold's protein structure prediction earned the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Hassabis and Jumper.
In April 2023, Google merged DeepMind with Brain to form Google DeepMind under Hassabis. The combined lab was named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential Companies in 2025.
In March 2025, the lab launched Gemini Robotics, models allowing robots of any shape to perceive, reason, use tools, and interact with humans, capable of solving complex real-world tasks without specific training.
