In January 2024, BMW signed with Figure AI for Plant Spartanburg. Figure 02 operated 10-hour shifts, moved 90,000+ sheet-metal components, covered 1.2 million steps across 1,250 operating hours, contributing to 30,000+ BMW X3 vehicles.
The deployment revealed that the robot's forearm was the top hardware failure point, directly informing Figure 03's redesigned wrist.
In early 2026, BMW launched a pilot at Plant Leipzig with Hexagon's AEON humanoid for battery assembly, and established a Center of Competence for Physical AI in Production.
