Tesla announced its Optimus humanoid robot at AI Day on August 19, 2021. The concept was initially represented by a person in a robot suit, but outlined an ambitious vision for a robot to handle dangerous and repetitive tasks.
In September 2022, at Tesla's second AI Day, the company showcased semi-functional prototypes of Optimus, with one version walking on stage. Throughout 2023, videos showed Optimus performing increasingly complex tasks including sorting colored blocks and yoga poses.
In December 2023, Tesla unveiled Optimus Generation 2, featuring a slimmer figure with improved hands, smoother movements, and demonstrations of walking, dancing, and delicate manipulation. By May 2024, Optimus robots were performing tasks at Tesla factories.
At the "We, Robot" event in October 2024, Tesla showcased Optimus interacting autonomously with attendees. In June 2024, Musk announced that Optimus would enter limited production in 2025, with over 1,500 units deployed in Tesla facilities and plans for external sales at an estimated $30,000 price point in 2026.
