Generalist is an AI research company developing foundation models for embodied intelligence, with a focus on robotic dexterity, physical reasoning, and general-purpose manipulation. Founded in 2024 by researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Boston Dynamics, the company is building AI systems that enable robots to understand, interact with, and adapt to the physical world through scalable learning rather than task-specific programming. Its research centers on embodied foundation models that combine physical commonsense, perception, and manipulation, allowing robots to acquire versatile skills across diverse environments. Backed by investors including NVIDIA and Bezos Expeditions, Generalist is advancing the intelligence layer needed for the next generation of autonomous robots.

In March 2026, Generalist highlighted its first public live demo at NVIDIA GTC, presenting how GEN-0 helped stand up a new mobile manipulation platform on a compressed deployment schedule.
Generalist was founded in 2024 by researchers and operators from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Boston Dynamics. The company set out to build embodied foundation models for dexterity and physical commonsense, with teams split between the Bay Area and Boston.
In November 2025, Generalist publicly introduced GEN-0, describing it as a new class of embodied foundation models designed to scale with high-fidelity physical interaction and capture human-level reflexes and physical commonsense for robots.
