Collaborative dual-arm robot with precision assembly, integrated vision, and safe human-robot operation.
NEXTAGE is a collaborative industrial robot developed by Kawada Robotics, a Japanese robotics company specializing in dual-arm automation for manufacturing. Introduced in 2009, NEXTAGE combines a human-inspired upper body with a compact wheeled base, enabling it to work safely alongside people without the need for traditional safety fencing. The platform has become one of the most widely deployed collaborative humanoid-style robots in Japanese manufacturing. The robot features approximately 15 degrees of freedom, including six degrees of freedom in each arm, along with articulated neck and waist joints for flexible positioning. Each arm can handle payloads of approximately 1.5 kilograms with repeatability of around ±0.03 millimeters, making NEXTAGE well suited to precision assembly tasks. Stereo cameras mounted in the head and additional cameras in the wrists provide vision-guided manipulation and allow the robot to adapt to changing part locations and production layouts.
