About Atlas

Atlas is the all-electric humanoid robot developed by Boston Dynamics, the Massachusetts robotics company owned by Hyundai Motor Group. Introduced in 2024, it replaces the company’s long-running hydraulic Atlas research platform with a production-oriented design built for industrial applications. The robot stands about 1.5 meters tall, weighs approximately 89 kilograms, and features 56 degrees of freedom, with joints capable of rotating beyond human limits to reach and manipulate objects from unconventional angles. Atlas is designed to handle payloads of up to 20 kilograms during repetitive lifting tasks and uses onboard perception, force control, and autonomous navigation to operate in dynamic industrial environments. Boston Dynamics is targeting applications including material handling, part sequencing, machine tending, and case picking. The robot is currently undergoing real-world pilot deployments at Hyundai manufacturing facilities, where it is performing production sequencing tasks ahead of a broader rollout to select commercial partners.
