ASIMO is a research humanoid robot developed by Honda, the Japanese automaker, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential humanoid robots ever created. Its name stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility. First unveiled in October 2000, ASIMO evolved through several generations until its final version in 2011, which stood approximately 1.3 meters tall, weighed around 48 kilograms, and featured 57 degrees of freedom. It could walk at speeds of up to 2.7 kilometers per hour, run at nearly 9 kilometers per hour, climb stairs, avoid obstacles, recognize faces, and respond to voice commands, showcasing some of the most advanced humanoid capabilities of its era. Honda developed ASIMO as a research and technology demonstration platform rather than a commercial product, using it to advance bipedal locomotion, autonomous navigation, and human-robot interaction. Production ended in 2018, and the robot made its final public appearance in 2022 as Honda shifted its robotics research toward avatar and remote-operation technologies. ASIMO remains one of the defining milestones in humanoid robotics and helped establish many of the concepts that underpin modern humanoid development.
