Japanese multinational founded in 1948, Honda pioneered humanoid robotics with ASIMO, which debuted in 2000 after development beginning in 1986. ASIMO was retired in March 2022 after over two decades as the world's most recognized humanoid robot. Honda now focuses on avatar style robots and repurposed ASIMO technology into its vehicle OS.

Introduction

Honda's robotics journey began in secret in 1986 with a dedicated research center for humanoid technologies. The earliest prototype, E0, could walk in a straight line. Over seven years, Honda iterated through the E-series (E0-E6), progressively mastering bipedal walking.

Company Story

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. is a Japanese multinational corporation founded in 1948, one of the world's largest automobile and motorcycle manufacturers. In robotics, Honda is a historic pioneer: its ASIMO humanoid, developed over a 36-year program beginning in 1986, was the world's most recognized bipedal robot before its retirement in 2022. Honda now develops avatar robots applying ASIMO's technologies to teleoperation and autonomous systems.

History

In 1993, Honda transitioned to P-series robots. The P2, unveiled in December 1996, stunned the robotics world as the first self-regulating two-legged humanoid walking robot. ASIMO was introduced on November 20, 2000, at just 120 cm tall and 43 kg. It became a global icon: running, serving drinks, recognizing faces, and navigating autonomously.

In July 2018, Honda announced it would cease ASIMO development to focus on practical applications. ASIMO made its final appearance in March 2022. The company pivoted to avatar robots, teleoperated systems combining ASIMO's dexterous hands, bipedal mobility, and sensor suite with remote control and AI-supported autonomy.

At CES 2025, Honda introduced ASIMO OS, signaling that ASIMO's legacy would live on as a software platform powering its next generation of robotic systems.
