The platform debuted at IMTS in Chicago on September 14 and includes three new robot arms, the UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300 and UR18g-950, named for their payload and reach specifications.
Gen 7 introduces an AI-ready tool flange that delivers data, power and safety connections directly to cameras and high-bandwidth sensors mounted on the robot. The system also includes built-in force-torque sensing, impedance control and real-time data exchange for tasks including dexterous manipulation and force-sensitive assembly.
The new CB7 Core controller provides 40% more compute power while occupying 30% less space than the previous generation. It supports connections with PLCs, manufacturing execution systems, vision systems and external computing infrastructure and can also be used with Universal Robots’ existing e-Series and UR Series arms.
Software is built around PolyScope X, which provides open APIs and ROS 2 communication for developers integrating edge AI and external processing systems. Gen 7 also adds a redesigned teach pendant and a tool-flange interface that allows operators to teach and program tasks directly at the robot.
Universal Robots is demonstrating Gen 7 at IMTS with more than 20 ecosystem partners, including Cognex, Schunk, Psyonic, Robotiq and Inbolt. Inbolt’s vision software can run directly on the UR controller without a separate vision PC, according to the companies.
Universal Robots says it has now sold more than 100,000 cobots worldwide.
