NVIDIA is reportedly moving closer to acquiring Hugging Face in a deal valued at approximately $12.9 billion, according to reports cited by TechCrunch. However, the companies had not yet signed a definitive agreement, meaning the deal could still change or fall through.
The potential acquisition is particularly interesting for robotics. Hugging Face has increasingly expanded beyond traditional AI models and datasets into open-source robotics, including its LeRobot platform and its acquisition of Pollen Robotics. The company has positioned open hardware and software as an important pathway toward making robotic systems more accessible to developers.
NVIDIA, meanwhile, has been building a broad robotics ecosystem around its Isaac platform and GR00T humanoid models. Its 2026 reference humanoid platform combines robot hardware, onboard computing, simulation, data generation, and AI models to help researchers develop more capable machines.
Bringing these ecosystems together could create a powerful combination: NVIDIA’s computing infrastructure and robotics technology alongside Hugging Face’s enormous open-source developer community, models, and datasets.
The implications could extend beyond humanoid robots. Open-source tools are becoming increasingly important for teaching machines how to perceive environments, manipulate objects, and perform physical tasks. A deeper connection between NVIDIA and Hugging Face could therefore accelerate the development of general-purpose Physical AI.
For the robotics industry, the potential deal is another signal that the competition is shifting. The next generation of robotics may depend not only on better motors and hardware, but on whoever can build the strongest ecosystem for AI models, training data, simulation, and real-world robot deployment.
