EcoPro formally outlined the strategy on September 7, saying it expects high-nickel ternary batteries to be an early fit for humanoid robots because they can store more energy at lower weight than many lower-cost chemistries. Reducing battery mass is particularly important for humanoids, where additional weight increases the load placed on motors and actuators.
The company sees solid-state batteries as the longer-term opportunity. Its subsidiary EcoPro BM has been developing sulfide-based solid electrolytes for four years and currently operates a pilot plant with annual capacity of about 40 tonnes.
EcoPro says the material has already completed quality validation with major battery manufacturers. It is now discussing pre-production with customers and has completed design work for a production line targeting mass production in 2027. The company is also developing cathode materials specifically for solid-state cells, while designing the process so existing ternary cathode production lines can be adapted if demand grows.
The move puts another established battery materials company directly into the humanoid supply chain. EcoPro had already presented robot-focused battery materials at InterBattery earlier this year, but the latest announcement gives more detail on its commercial roadmap and solid-state production preparations.
No humanoid manufacturer has been named as a customer, and EcoPro has not announced a robot battery supply contract. Its current plans are focused on materials development and preparing manufacturing capacity for expected demand.
